Are you getting calls requesting an all natural or organic pest control service?
A special shout to Steve Berro of Berros Pest Control in Newbury Park, CA liked the podcast. https://www.facebook.com/steve.berro.7
With all the products out here now being natural or organic I get a lot of calls from people wanting an all natural or organic pest control service for their home or business and gardens.
I typically ask the caller to explain why it is they want an organic or all natural pest control service. What are they looking for, most common reply is I want you to come and spray my home with a natural product.
In other words their idea of natural pest control is changing from a traditional pesticide to a natural pesticide spray.
The major reason is because they have a new baby or a new pest or someone in the home that has a serious illness and do not want any toxic chemicals in the house, they have gotten rid of all the toxic chemical and have replaced them with all natural products.
This is a serious enough person that has taken serious steps in this direction and should be taken seriously.
I always ask them how does a hospital surgery room remain sterile from the contamination of pests and the diseases they spread and the contamination of chemical pesticides at the same time, the question is designed to get the caller to really think about how this is achieved.
I let them off the hook after a few umms and awws.
And them I explain why natural and organics do not translate into safe or effective.
All an organic product is to be certified organic is to have a carbon atom, all living matter has carbon.
A natural product could be natural and organic but not safe and not effective. Organic peanuts are natural and organic but if your allergic to them they can kill you.
The first thing I want to know is the current medical conditions in the home.
Then I can develop a control strategy to control the pest problem in the most responsible manner possible and in most cases take additional measures in sensitive accounts.
We explain how IPM is the process used in hospitals to control pest in the most natural way possible by excluding them. To most people this is a let down, like a simple cop out.
But I will explain how exclusion and prevention is the only way to any effective pest control program, most people don’t understand pest biology and they are not expected to know I have never walked into a house and found trumans pest control manual on the kitchen table or on a book shelf.
To most people pest control translate to a guy coming to my house once a month and spraying insecticide from a shiny can all over my house and when he no longer control my pests he must be watering it down so I will just get another pest control guy that will spray my entire house with something stronger. This is the way they have always seen it and this is pest control to them.
So this issue of seeling stuff with a caulk gun and baiting sounds a bit hokey. And a lot of work for the homeowner. I mean can’t you just spray something you know quick and easy.
If you can’t use it in a hospital room you should you use it.
I really enjoyed your last two podcasts,
I have a young pest control business I am developing. It started as a landscaping business but the demand for pest control became overwhelming. The fact that you do ornamentals, rings a similar tune, and I can relate well to your message.
I am excited to hear your next podcast. Comparing organic pest control to organic gardening while building off this last show…
Preaching cultural controls and IPM is right on. And yeah eliminating nearly any pest problem, solely with organic products and no cultural controls is next to impossible.
The one interesting difference between organic pest control products and organic gardening products: You can manipulate the health of the host when you garden. Therefore there are organic products that can be used as the lone cultural control, and completely control an insect pest on an ornamental. I guess fertilization is like pest control’s exclusion. Sonic bloom. The world’s greatest organic product, and probably the best thing ever in general.
