38 essential oils tested for comparative repellency against mosquito bites
38 essential oils from plants at 3 concentrations were screened for mosquito repellent activity on human subjects against the Aedes aegypti mosquito under laboratory conditions.
Applied to volunteer’s forearm at 0.1 mL of oil was applied per 30 cm2 of exposed skin.
The oils were applied at a 10% or 50% and 100% concentrations.
None of the 38 oils prevented mosquito bites for as long as two hours.
However the undiluted oils of
• Cymbopogon nardus (citronella)
• Pogostemon cablin (patchuli)
• Syzygium aromaticum (clove)
• Zanthoxylum limonella (Thai name: makaen)
Provided two hours of complete repellency.
From these initial results then the 3 concentrations of 10%, 50% and undiluted of citronella, patchouli, clove and makaen were tested for repellency tests against:
• Culex quinquefasciatus
• Anopheles dirus.
As expected, the undiluted oil showed the highest protection in each case.
Clove oil gave the longest duration of 100% repellency (2–4 h) against all three species of mosquito.

The Repellency Of 18 Essential Oils Extracted From Thailandies Plants Against 4 Mosquito Vectors
In this study the evaluation of the reported repellency effects of essential oils from plants in Thailand where evaluated against 4 mosquito vectors:
Aedes aegypti,
Aedes albopictus,
Anopheles dirus
Anopheles Culex
With human volunteers, under laboratory conditions using under laboratory conditions essential oils that were extracted plant which belonging to 11 plant families, and the oils were then prepared as a 10% solution in absolute ethanol with additives.
2 repellents deet and IR3535 were also prepared in the same formulation as the essential oils and tested for repellency as controls.
The essential oils were also evaluated for oviposition deterrent effects against Ae. aegypti under
laboratory conditions.
The results showed that night-biting mosquitoes Anopheles dirus and Anopheles Culex quinquefasciatus
and Aedes albopictus were more sensitive to all the essential oils with repellency lasting 4.5 – 8 hours than was Aedes aegypti with repellency lasting 0.3 – 2.8 hours.
Deet and IR3535 provided repellency against all four mosquito for 6.7- 8 hours.
All the essential oils had oviposition deterrent activity against Aedes aegypti with various degrees of repellency ranging from 16.6% to 94.7%.

Repellency effect of 41 essential oils against Aedes, Anopheles, and Culex mosquitoes
The five most effective oils were those of
Litsea (Litsea cubeba),
Cajeput (Melaleuca leucadendron),
Niaouli (Melaleuca quinquenervia),
Violet (Viola odorata),
Catnip (Nepeta cataria),
which induced a protection time of 8 hour at the maximum and a 100% repellency against all three species.

Repellency of 5 Essential Oils to Control Mosquitoes
The repellency of 5 different essential oil in 6 concentrations of 5, 10, 25, 50, 75, and 100%
5 essential oils
• Bourbon geranium
• Cedarwood
• Clove
• Peppermint
• Thyme
Aedes aegypti (L.) and Anopheles albimanus Wiedemann when applied to human skin was determined in laboratory tests.
Cedarwood oil failed to repel mosquitoes
Only high concentrations of peppermint oil repelled Ae. aegypti.
None of the oils tested prevented mosquito bite when used at the 5 or 10% concentration.
Thyme and clove oils were the most effective mosquito repellents and provided 1½ to 3½ h of protection, depending on oil concentration.
Clove oil at 50% combined with geranium oil at 50% or with thyme oil at 50% prevented biting by Anopheles albimanus for 1.25 to 2.5 hours.

Cedar oil (Cupressus & Juniperus spp):
The major components of cedar oil (Virginia) are α- and β-cedrene at 80% concentration, cedrol at 3-14% and cedrenol.
In a fumigant bioassay test of 53 essential oils and their toxicity to 3 stages of greenhouse
whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum).
The mortality rate was less than 40% at all life stages with cedar oil at the highest tested concentration making it one of the least effective oils in the trial.
Essential oils of Cupressus funebris, Juniperus communis, and J. chinensis (Cupressaceae) as repellents against ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) and mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) and as toxicants against mosquitoes
104 compounds where identified the ability to kill Ae. aegypti larvae, at 80 and 100% at 125 and 250 ppm, respectively.
